What the Heck is a Pet Trust?
For many people their pets become a member of the family very quickly. I know this to be true in my house. In fact, sometimes the dogs eat better than we do. As pet owners, we devote a lot of time and resources to our pets. We want them to have good lives while under our care and appreciate the joy and health they bring to our family. Unfortunately, when planning for our futures our pets can get overlooked.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, between 100,000 and 500,000 pets will be sent to shelters or abandoned due to their owner’s death or incapacitation. Up until the last few years, pets seemed to be included only in the wills of the eccentric. However, there are now 46 states (including Maryland) with pet trust statutes.
A Pet Trust allows you to set aside money to care for your pet and name a trustee to fulfill your wishes, which can be put into effect should you become incapacitated or hospitalized. At Starkey Law, we have a personal understanding of what our pets mean to us and ways to take care of them even after we are unable.
To give back to our pets, Starkey Law is an event sponsor to Pets with Disabilities’ fundraiser “A Toast to Pets with Disabilities”. This event is taking place at Running Hare Vineyard in Prince Frederick, Maryland on June 3, 2016.
